FFmpeg 3.4 Adds NDI® I/O

Many applications use the FFmpeg libraries to record, convert, and stream a wide range of video and audio media file types. OK, we’re guilty of phenomenal understatement there, actually. The FFmpeg open source libraries are used in almost every video conversion library in the world and power video playback for a huge range of software and platforms, including Google Chrome, YouTube, VLC Media Player, Media Player Classic HC, the Linux version of Firefox, and pretty much every file converter and application known to man. As of version 3.4, those libraries support NewTek NDI® input and output (FFmpeg 3.4 Changelog).

NewTek’s NDI technology allows video and audio sources plus metadata and communications to be shared bi-directionally across an IP network. This eliminates the need for costly direct connections with expensive cable runs and infrastructure upgrades to transport media between video production systems and applications. The auto-discovery features in NDI mean that all NDI-aware applications will see all NDI sources being served to the network, instantly as soon as they are made available. The NDI SDK is royalty-free for any company looking to establish IP workflows within their organization, or in commercial products and applications they deliver. The most widely adopted IP video workflow technology, there are hundreds of NDI-enabled products in the hands of millions of users.

Earlier in this year, in the v3.3 FFmpeg update, support was added for NewTek’s SpeedHQ native video file format, making it available in the many applications using the FFmpeg libraries. You can read the details in our NewTek Studio blog: NewTek’s Native Video File Format Goes Global.
