Getting Started with TriCaster® TC1 Chapter 4: Live Input Configuration

The TriCaster® TC1 supports up to 16 live inputs in the Switcher interface. In this chapter, trainer Richard Evans shows how those inputs are used. The inputs showing in your TriCaster TC1 multiviewer are unassigned virtual inputs, so the operator can choose what literal source is assigned to each of them.

For the hybrid IP/SDI TC1, the literal, or physical, inputs are the four 3G/HD/SD-SDI HD-BNC input connectors on the unit, plus the network ports since TC1 supports up to 16 NDI® inputs for video-over-IP. TC1 is not limited to the four physical inputs on the unit, but can accept up to a full 16 with the optional NewTek Connect Studio Input and Studio I/O optional add-ons. These offer:

  • NewTek Connect Studio Input: 4 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs on HD-BNC connectors
  • NewTek Connect Studio I/O: 8 3G/HD/SD-SDI HD-BNC connectors that can be used individually for input or output, and in groups of four as 3G-SDI quad-link 4K 60p input or output connections. You can add as many Studio I/O modules as you wish to make up to 16 4K inputs.

In addition to the configurability with hardware inputs, TC1 also has options for support of other IP standards. The NewTek Connect Studio I/O IP model offers 4 channels, configurable either in or out, for converting to and from NDI and SMPTE 2110 IP standards. NewTek’s NDI is a IP technology for the bi-directional transport of video, audio and data over standard networks at very low latency and very high quality. NDI is resolution-independent, so it carries not only SD/HD/UHD but also any custom format and is ready for resolutions beyond UHD. In the years since its release, NDI has become the leading IP technology for video production, with integration into thousands of products in the hands of millions of users. SMPTE 2110 is an IP standard published in 2018 for uncompressed video, audio and data over managed high-bandwidth networks for broadcast production.

Setting up a virtual input begins with hovering the mouse pointer over that input in the multiviewer, and clicking on the Settings gear icon that appears. This opens the Input Configuration panel. The first tab on the panel is the Input tab, and here you can select the source to assign to the input to any that are visible on the physical inputs for the TC1 or on the network. You essentially have a virtual router that can see any number of sources that are available, and select and use up to sixteen of them in the Switcher interface.

If the source happens to be a PTZ camera, the PTZ button opens the settings for configuring control options for a variety of makes of PTZ cameras.

  • Images, which provides automatic color correction, proc amp controls, the LiveMatte controls for setting up a virtual set, and the cropping controls
  • Automation, which offers automation control options that can be applied to the input; these will be covered in a later video in this series.
